Lah, if you think business email compromise (BEC) attacks are just another techie term, think again. These scams continue to outsmart even the most savvy folks in the IT world. Seriously, it’s like they’re playing chess while we’re still trying to figure out checkers!

So what exactly is BEC? Simply put, it’s when someone pretends to be a trusted source, like your boss or a supplier, and tricks you into sending money or sensitive info. You might think, ‘Not me lah, I won’t fall for this!’ but that’s exactly what many companies thought too.

According to the webinar I caught recently, most BEC attacks succeed not because of fancy hacking skills, but due to simple human errors. You know, like when you’re in a rush and click on something you shouldn’t? Just one wrong move and boom, you’ve opened the floodgates for a cybercriminal.

This matters because these attacks are becoming more sophisticated. They study their targets, learn their habits, and craft convincing messages. Whether you’re an IT professional or just an everyday worker, it’s crucial to recognise these threats. We all have a part to play in keeping our IT environment safe.

Every time we receive an email asking for a money transfer or sensitive information, we need to pause and think: ‘Is this for real?’ Sometimes the email looks so legit, you wonder if you’re being paranoid. But better safe than sorry, right? Don’t be the next story in the news!
